Respondent

Respondent is a high-paying research marketplace that connects participants (like you) with researchers looking for specific expertise or consumer opinions. Unlike typical survey sites that pay cents, Respondent studies often pay an average of $95 per hour, though they are more competitive to get into.

Here is how to navigate the platform effectively to start earning:

1. The Strategy: Focus on Your "Professional" Edge

While Respondent has general consumer studies (e.g., "What do you think of this coffee brand?"), the real money is in professional B2B studies.

  • Industry Experts: If you work in tech, healthcare, finance, or management, you are in high demand.

  • Software Users: Many researchers want to talk to people who use specific tools daily (like Salesforce, Figma, Excel, or AWS).

  • LinkedIn Verification: Link your LinkedIn profile. This is the #1 way to gain trust with researchers. Profiles with verified employment are significantly more likely to be selected.

2. How the Process Works

It’s more like applying for a mini-job than taking a survey.

  1. Browse the Dashboard: You’ll see a feed of "Projects." Each lists the incentive and the time commitment.

  2. The Screener: You fill out a brief, unpaid questionnaire (3–5 minutes). This determines if you meet the researcher's exact criteria.

  3. The Invite: If you’re a match, the researcher will invite you to book a time slot. Act fast—invites are often sent to more people than there are slots.

  4. The Session: Most are remote Zoom interviews, but some are "unmoderated" (you record your screen while using a website) or "diary studies" (tasks over several days).

  5. Payment: Payments are processed via Tremendous (which allows for virtual Visa cards and other options). A 5% fulfillment fee is usually deducted from your incentive by the platform.

3. Tips for Getting Selected

Since the pay is high, competition is stiff. Use these tactics to stand out:

  • The "Freshness" Rule: Log in daily. New studies are posted constantly, and being one of the first 10 people to complete a screener increases your odds.

  • Be Detailed in Screeners: If a screener asks "Which tools do you use?", don't just click the boxes. If there's a text box, briefly explain how you use them.

  • Quality Profile Photo: Use a clear, professional-looking headshot. Researchers want to see the person they'll be interviewing.

  • Don't "Game" the System: Researchers look for consistency. If your profile says you're a "Marketing Director" but your screener answers suggest you're a student, you'll be flagged and potentially banned.

4. Realistic Expectations

  • It’s not a full-time job: Even with a perfect profile, you might only qualify for 1–4 studies a month.

  • Qualification Rate: It is normal to apply for 10–15 studies before getting one "Yes." Treat the screeners as a quick daily habit.

  • Response Time: It can take 5–8 days for a researcher to review your screener and send an invite.

A good first move: Complete your profile to 100% and connect your work email or LinkedIn. This immediately puts you in a higher tier for the algorithm.
